Flight disruptions can be stressful — and costly. Depending on where and how you flew, you may be entitled to compensation or assistance. Fly Reclaim can check your eligibility for free and help you claim what’s yours.
1. EU Air Passenger Rights (EC 261)
If you’re flying from, to, or within the European Union (including certain non-EU countries like Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland), the EU regulation EC 261 protects you. You may be eligible for up to €600 in compensation if your flight is:
  • Delayed by 3+ hours
  • Canceled without 14 days’ notice
  • Denied boarding due to overbooking
Additional rights under EC 261 include:
  • Meals, drinks, and accommodation if stranded
  • The option to choose a refund or rebooking
  • Compensation even if the airline offers travel vouchers (you can request cash instead)
2. UK Air Passenger Rights (UK261)
Post-Brexit, the UK introduced UK261, which is similar to EC 261 but applies to:
  • Flights departing from UK airports
  • Flights arriving in the UK on UK-based airlines
Compensation rules are similar, with payouts up to £520 depending on flight distance.
3. US Passenger Rights
  • Denied boarding (bumping) due to overbooking can result in compensation up to $1,550.
  • Airlines must refund you if they cancel a flight and you choose not to travel.
  • Delays and cancellations are mostly governed by airline policies, though you may have other rights under state or federal law.
4. International Rights — Montreal Convention
If your flight is international and not covered by EU or UK law, the Montreal Convention may apply. It covers delays, lost/damaged baggage, and related expenses. Airlines can be liable for significant sums if they cannot prove they took reasonable measures to avoid the disruption.
5. When You’re Not Eligible for Compensation
Not every disruption qualifies. Airlines are not required to pay compensation if the issue was caused by extraordinary circumstances, such as:
  • Extreme weather
  • Political unrest
  • Air traffic control strikes
  • Security risks
Even when compensation isn’t due, you may still be entitled to care (meals, accommodation) or refunds. Fly Reclaim can check your case for free.
